Google DeepMind Introduces CodeMender: A New AI Agent that Uses Gemini Deep Think to Automatically Patch Critical Software Vulnerabilities
What if an AI agent could localize a root cause, prove a candidate fix via automated analysis and testing, and proactively rewrite related code to eliminate the entire vulnerability class—then open an upstream patch for review? Google DeepMind introduces CodeMender, an AI agent that generates, validates, and upstreams fixes for real-world vulnerabilities using Gemini “Deep Think” reasoning and a tool-augmented workflow. In six months of internal deployment, CodeMender contributed 72 security patches across open-source projects, including codebases up to ~4.5M lines, and is designed to act both reactively (patching known issues) and proactively (rewriting code to remove vulnerability classes). Understanding…
In the proof-of-concept attack demonstrated by Wiz, the attackers exploit this vulnerability to start a reverse shell that allows them to execute additional commands. This can lead to credential theft from the environment, such as SSH keys, AWS IAM tokens, and certificates. It can also lead to malware and cryptominer deployment. Lack of Redis authentication is a widespread issue While Redis supports authentication, it is often deployed without it, especially on internal networks, but also on the internet. For example, the Wiz researchers note that in 57% of cloud environments, Redis is deployed as a container image and the official…
Miller’s headstrong creativity is evoked by her wry quotes; she once explained of her work: “It was a matter of getting out on a damn limb, and sawing it off behind you.” The urgency, audaciousness, and unexpected compassion that defines so much of her photography is also inextricably linked to her personal experience. She was born in 1907 in Poughkeepsie, New York State; she began her global adventures in her youth, though her ultimate home was Farleys House in the East Sussex countryside, where she moved in 1949 with her husband, British painter and curator Roland Penrose, and their infant son…
Netflix When Ed Gein died at the age of 77 in 1984, the Wisconsin-based serial killer had seen his grisly misdeeds spawn two of the greatest horror films of all time: Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” and Tobe Hooper’s “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.” These movies were not straight, factual depictions of Gein’s crimes, but they saw terrifying potential in exploiting the monstrousness produced by a mix of social isolation, bullying, and parental abuse. As they became box office hits and spawned sequels, fans of the films dug into the lore of…
Millions of motorists mis-sold car finance deals could receive average payouts of around £700, under a compensation scheme announced by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) on Tuesday. The regulator estimates that 14 million finance agreements between April 2007 and November 2024 were affected by unfair commission practices, leading to an expected £8.2 billion in redress and a potential £11 billion total bill once administrative costs are included. The scheme, which will cover loans issued through so-called discretionary commission arrangements (DCAs), is set to become the largest financial redress programme since the PPI mis-selling scandal, when 34 million consumers received average…

Cool winds, crunchy leaves, and pumpkins on the porch mean it’s soup weather time at our house. The Instant Pot starts to live on the counter and all of the favorite cold-weather comfort foods start their rotation. Tomato soup was one of my favorite soups before switching to a real-food diet. Now, I don’t think I could eat the canned stuff if I tried, but this homemade version is wonderful. Another bonus of making homemade soup is the versatility. This recipe is naturally dairy-free, and you can easily increase or decrease the spices and salt to your family’s tastes. (My…

Photographer Olivier Lardière captured this crystal-clear image of the Milky Way from Beaver Point in British Columbia, Canada.S&T Online Photo Gallery The vast majority of my stargazing is done at home. In the close suburbs of Portland, Oregon, I am under Bortle 7 skies — a challenge, but not overly disappointing when you’re used to it. But now I’ve been spoiled by a single night in Bortle 1 conditions. I’d been to one other dark-sky campout, the 25th annual Oregon Star Party in the Ochoco National Forest in 2012. I had no plan, no equipment, and little understanding of how…
