To tide folks over between the wanderlust of Superman and the imminent arrival of Supergirl, Adult Swim dropped a fresh look at the series that sparked DC Studios’ hope-core wave by offering a peek at the third season of My Adventures With Superman, coming this June.
The trailer, first revealed exclusively by Variety, shows Clark Kent (Jack Quaid) struggling with the responsibilities of being Superman. Given that past seasons have already seen him dealing with multiversal madness, growing pains in his relationship with Lois Lane (Alice Lee), and de-brainwashing his cousin, Kara (Kiana Madeira), it’s hard not to feel for the golden retriever of a man who has to suit up to battle giant mechs, dinosaur men, and Giganta in his day-to-day. Unfortunately, just when Clark seems to be reaching a cruising altitude (both literally and metaphorically), the once-clear skies of Metropolis now have Cyborg Superman (Max Mittelman)and Superboy (Darren Criss) soaring around, slamming him into the sides of skyscrapers. Dude can’t catch a break.
Thankfully, as the trailer alludes, Superman’s gonna get some help from Supergirl, Lois, and his best pal, Jimmy Olsen (Ishmel Sahid), in dealing with Metropolis’ new arrivals. Also, Superboy goes from being aggro as hell to a little annoying to Clark, which is for the best, all things considered, given how awkward the talk about his parentage is gonna be once the show gets moving. Outside of that, we can look forward to seeing Lois clock Lex Luthor square in the jaw and more cozy slice-of-life hijinks among the group of super friends, which is all we could ever ask for.
In io9’s review of My Adventures With Superman season one, we said the animated series was an endearingly fun love story, writing, “This is probably the most confident piece of Superman media in years, and it’s hard not to be charmed by everything thrown into a single episode. It’s consistently funny, and the way it threads everything through the lens of its two romantic leads, or Clark himself, helps ensure that it never fully loses sight of what it’s all about.” And sure enough, that sentiment has not only carried over into its second season, but it’s also led DC to explore recapturing its sense of animated whimsy in its upcoming spinoff, My Adventures With Green Lantern, and Mister Miracle, which is also upcoming.
Season three of My Adventures With Superman premieres on Adult Swim on June 13 with next-day streaming on HBO Max.
