Since 2006, we’ve helped the most innovative startups and reputable brands design and ship products worth talking about. Slack, Google, Robinhood, Nike, Uber, Midjourney, and Headspace to name a few. Twenty years in, our focus stays the same: creating world-class digital products that are thoughtful, functional, and built to last.
Today, our experience extends across industries like AI, fintech, productivity, healthcare, and SaaS, helping shape what’s next.
At the center of it all is a remote-first team headquartered in British Columbia, Canada and spread across over 18 countries globally.
Our Journey
Metalab was founded by Andrew Wilkinson.
Since then, we’ve shipped over 475 products, including 24 unicorns, used by more than 2.2 billion people worldwide.
And while awards have never been the goal, our work has been recognized along the way, including Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies in 2016, and a finalist nod for Design Company of the Year in 2024.
Showcase
Suno
Suno is breaking down barriers and unlocking a new generation of music with their AI prompt-to-song technology. We partnered with their team on what started as a brand engagement and quickly grew into a close collaboration across brand, product design, and engineering.
From the three core prompts to the brand, visual language, and Discover and For You pages, we helped craft an ownable experience that empowers more people to create music and unlock their creative potential.
As an early-stage startup fresh on the scene, Suno has already made a significant impact with millions of users, reaching #11 on the top charts for Music on the Apple App Store less than 24 hours after launching.
Uber
We have a rich history with Uber, collaborating closely over the years. With their team focused on growth in the early days, we came in to accelerate feature development and unify their visual language. Since then, we’ve touched nearly every product in their vast ecosystem.
Much of our early design contributions for Uber’s core app are still felt in the product today—from designing the initial fare splitting feature set to rolling out rider/driver preferences. The devices change but the user experience foundation remains.
We’re proud to have played a small part in Uber’s success. Through our partnership with them, we completed five major projects in three years, impacting 131 million users across Uber Rider and Uber Eats.
Windsurf
Windsurf is building AI tools that help developers code smarter, move faster, and avoid roadblocks. We partnered with the founders to craft a flexible brand system built to scale across their marketing site, product, and beyond. At its core, this rebrand captures what the product unlocks: limitless flow.
Their new brand reflects a system that balances structure and expression, engineered for the way developers think and work.
The rebrand helped accelerate their momentum, leading to strategic acquisitions, including a $2.4 billion deal with Google and another by Cognition, just months after launch.
Atoms
James Clear quickly became a New York Times bestselling author with Atomic Habits, an easy yet proven habit-changing system. Six years and a wave of fan requests later, he partnered with Metalab to productize it with Atoms—the official Atomic Habits app.
Atoms is an actionable habit-forming app built around James’ Four Laws of Behavior Change: (1) make it obvious, (2) make it attractive, (3) make it easy, and (4) make it satisfying. It’s designed to help users actually become the person they want to be.
Within a month of the launch, Atoms climbed to the top 10 in the App Store and received an Editors’ Choice award.
Culture & Team
Our team brings together designers, engineers, researchers, product strategists, and project managers from around the world, united by a shared love of craft.
Fully remote since day one, there are no office hours beyond a small overlap with our clients and no timesheets. The expectation is simple: do great work and hit your deadlines. How and when that work gets done is up to you.
We operate with a strong founder mindset and stay lean and execution-focused. Everyone is hands-on in the work, regardless of seniority, and teams are always 100% dedicated to a single client so they can go deep.
It’s this flexibility, focus, and ownership that shape how we work and the products we build together.
