So she kept everyone waiting and wondering. She seems to have had an instinctive grasp of what we now call PR, and liked to present herself as wholly devoted to her realm. From early in her reign she cultivated the image of the Virgin Queen. In 1559 she declared, in response to MPs asking her to marry, that eventually “a marble stone shall declare that a queen, having reigned such a time, lived and died a virgin”. At the end of Shekhar Kapur’s much-loved 1998 film, Elizabeth, the young monarch is played by Cate Blanchett, who then played her again in the 2007…

Marko Elez, a 25-year-old employee at Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has been granted access to sensitive databases at the U.S. Social Security Administration, the Treasury and Justice departments, and the Department of Homeland Security. So it should fill all Americans with a deep sense of confidence to learn that Mr. Elez over the weekend inadvertently published a private key that allowed anyone to interact directly with more than four dozen large language models (LLMs) developed by Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI. Designing visuals that respond to real-time data or user input usually means switching between multiple tools — one for animation, another for logic, and yet another for implementation. This back-and-forth can slow down iteration, make small changes cumbersome, and create a disconnect between design and behavior. If you’ve spent any time with Rive, you know it’s built to close that gap. It lets you design, animate, and add interaction all in one place — and with features like state machines and data binding, you can make your animations respond directly to variables and user actions. To demonstrate how we use…

Static Media We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. Where do movie ideas come from? For some filmmakers, it’s simply a lightning bolt of an idea from nowhere. For others, it’s a brand-mandated piece of intellectual property. And for some, all they have to do is take a look – for it is, indeed, in a book. Some of our greatest and best movies are adaptations of books, from “Gone With the Wind” to “The Godfather” to even “Die Hard.” It makes sense from the studio perspective…

Gravitational-wave astronomers have detected the collision of two beefy black holes, which created the most massive merger-made black hole found thus far. The event, GW231123, rippled through the two detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) on November 23, 2023, during the first part of the facility’s fourth observing run. The signal was brief but loud, the cosmic equivalent of a thunderclap. The event peaked around 60 Hz, near the lower end of LIGO’s reach. Lower frequencies correspond to higher masses — in this case, between 120 and 159 Suns for the larger black hole, 51 to 123 Suns…

A sharp decline in demand from pension funds for long-term UK government bonds could drive up the country’s borrowing costs by at least £20 billion over the coming decades, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR). The government’s independent fiscal watchdog warned that the shrinking appetite for gilts among defined benefit (DB) pension schemes—once a reliable cornerstone of long-term bond ownership—will have major implications for public finances. David Miles, a member of the OBR’s budget responsibility committee, described the outlook as “worrisome”, telling MPs that the UK is entering a new era in which one of the most dependable…
